Five years ago, the Crusaders had 13 players… don’t forget it takes 10 to play. Now Anderson has a stable of over 40 student-athletes, a varsity and junior varsity team.

“When we started, nobody had ever played lacrosse,” he said. “We were teaching the game, not the coach. We have progressed in leaps and bounds and that’s what you train for. To see these guys enjoy the game and have a positive lacrosse experience is our mission.

The Crusaders have gone 4-7 this season but continue to gain ground. They are placed in class D with Awty International, St. Pius X, The Village School and Emery / Weiner School. As the program grows, victories will come.

Concordia Boys Lacrosse’s 2021 record at first glance may not seem stellar, but it’s what the team did in the playoffs among other “firsts” in the program’s short history that will be remembered this spring.

The team finished third in the Southern District Class D of the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) in the regular season. There were several highlights, including the team’s four wins this spring, a record on the program.

Historically, Concordia had never made it past the first round of the playoffs in its first four seasons (2017-2020). This year, the Crusaders faced St. Pius X in the City Tournament semifinals where they avenged an 11-9 regular season loss and beat the Panthers 10-8 for the program’s first playoff victory.

The Crusaders advanced to the City Championship game against Emery / Weiner School where they narrowly missed the State Final Four loss 9-7.

The Concordia lacrosse program has had several players honored for their work on the field as voted on by district coaches. This year, six Crusaders were recognized as All States, two as All Districts, three as Honorable Mention and Assistant Coach Dan Woodend was selected as Assistant Coach of the Year. This is the first season that Concordia has had players honored as an all-state.

“It’s all word of mouth here and our players are our best defenders of our program,” he said. “We won a game in the first year and now we are winning strings together. We have so many multisport athletes participating in the program… five basketball players and several soccer and soccer players. Athletes who understand defense and play with their feet. ”

For Anderson and Concordia Lutheran, lacrosse is here to stay.

“Texas lacrosse is not going to sneak up on anyone anymore,” he said. “The popularity is at an all time high and it will only get better. Texas loves its high school sports and that’s the next big thing.”

At the end of the season, the head coaches selected a team of all-star THSLL Class D athletes from the South District and Concordia had a total of 12 athletes selected to play on the Red Team.

In the All-Star Game, four Crusaders entered the scoring column, including midfielder Owen Segura (Sr.) who finished with 2 goals and 1 assist. Midfielder Philip Semple (Jr.) scored 1 goal and 1 assist, while Attack Ben Smith (Sr.) and midfielder Jadon Finn (Jr.) each scored one goal.
