CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) – What started as a small gesture to donate clothes to an Afghan refugee has grown into a project to help thousands of people.

Cedar Falls Christian Church is organizing a clothing drive for Afghan refugees currently residing in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

Up to 13,000 Afghan refugees are currently there.

Leslie Farley’s daughter and her husband have been doing humanitarian work in Afghanistan for eight years and know one of the refugees.

This is how she learned that many are here in the United States with only the goods they carry or transport, due to their haste to escape Taliban rule.

When Farley heard this, she drove the car through her church.

“It’s hard to figure out, you know, knowing that there are people out there who are in hiding who want to leave, and they just aren’t able to do it,” Farley said. “The people who were able to leave with such urgency that they only had clothes on their backs, and the least we can do is support them.”

They receive donations at Cedar Falls Christian Church, located at 2727 W 4th Street in Cedar Falls, between noon and 6 p.m. daily until October 3.

If more donations arrive after October 3, the group can make a second trip to Fort McCoy to deliver them.
