A free community celebratory concert is scheduled at Kingston Road United Church on Saturday, September 25.

A free celebratory concert to mark Kingston Road United Church’s reopening weekend will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, September 25.

The free hour-long concert will feature violinist Mark Fewer and mezzo soprano Julia Dawson.

The concert is presented by the church as a way to thank the community for their support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are delighted to welcome our community back to our beautiful sanctuary for this celebratory concert,” said concert organizer Tim Dawson, member of the Kingston Road United Church congregation and choir.

Frewer and Julia Dawson will perform with accompanying musicians, including Jeanie Chung, Deborah Grimmett and Lucas Harris.

Frewer will play a Beethoven violin sonata.

Dawson will perform music for Oscura Nox, a film project she designed, directed and starred in. The music will include Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate and pieces from a work commissioned by Canadian-Iranian composer Iman Habibi.

The concert is free, but donations to the church’s Raise Our Roof fundraising campaign will be welcome.

“Among the many challenges that KRU faces when it reopens is the immediate need to replace the entire roof of the church, a huge and expensive undertaking,” said Dawson. “Although the concert is free, we hope members of the public will consider donating for the roof project. Our beautiful building is a valuable center of community activity and we rely on local support to allow us to continue serving our neighborhood.

The concert begins at 4:30 p.m. and all safety protocols, including proof of vaccination, mask wearing and distancing, will be in place.

The Kingston Road United Church is located at 975 Kingston Road.
In addition to being performed live for an audience, the concert will also be broadcast live on You Tube.
