ASKEWILLE- The Eric Baggett tournament, is held every year (except last year due to COVID) to remember Eric Baggett. The tournament is also meant to remind players that texting and driving or distracted driving can be fatal, as in the case of Eric.

At the end of the game, trophies are given to the winners and finalist teams, college girls and boys, most valuable players, as well as scholarships.

Two students from each participating team can be nominated to receive a scholarship. Each nominated player must have maintained a “B” average and be interested in going to college.

The first two selected will receive $ 750 in scholarship funds, while the other applicants will receive $ 500.

The allocation of funds was based on several criteria. The student should get two letters of recommendation from a viable person, such as a pastor, employer, etc.

Next, applicants must write an essay on texting and driving or distracted driving. Applicants must provide their cumulative grade point average (GPA) from first to last year. The nominees will be interviewed by the six members of the Eric Baggett Tournament Board of Directors. Council members will ask each candidate a battery of questions and record their answer.

Finally, the character of the nominees will be observed throughout the tournament, on and off the field.

Each year approximately $ 8,000 to $ 10,000 is raised to help support the tournament. These funds are strictly reserved for the use of the tournament. Funds are collected through tournament proceeds (concession stand, entrance fee and sale of T-shirts). The funds are also donated by local businesses and individuals.

Additional funds are provided in the form of a gospel concert which takes place in April. At the concert, there are tables that can seat eight people. Tables cost $ 100 each. Chicken and seafood dinners are available. So people can sit and enjoy a good meal while listening to gospel music. All proceeds from this event will go to the Baggett tournament.

The following athletes have been selected for the Eric Baggett Scholarship: Eliana Bazemore (Bethel Assembly Christian Academy) $ 750, Carter Hatcher (Northeast Academy) $ 500, Trent Hoggard (Ahoskie Christian) $ 500, Emalee Jones (Northeast Academy) $ 500, Camryn Joyner (Ridgecroft) $ 500, Caleb Porter (Ridgcroft) $ 750 and Brandon Williams (Bethel Assembly Christian Academy) $ 500.

All awarded scholarships will be held until the recipients are officially enrolled in the college.
