Icyl Irene Wood – Dodge City Daily Globe

DODGE CITY – Icyl Irene Wood, 99, died January 13, 2022 at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born January 6, 1923 in Ness County, the daughter of Ira E. and Laura V. (Stewart) Baldwin.

Icyl moved with his family to Reno County when he was 10 years old. She graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. After receiving her associate degree, she taught at the school from 1943 to 1948. On September 22, 1946, she married Howard B. Wood in South Hutchinson. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1997.

The family lived in Montezuma and Coldwater for a short time before settling in Dodge City, where they have resided ever since. Icyl was an accountant for the Southwest Equipment Company and the Silver Spur Lodge. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, where she served in Sunday School and the Junior Children’s Church. Icyl was also a member of the Win A Couple and Happy Partners, Swing Shift Circle, Women’s Council and Keenagers classes, all church ministries.

Survivors include a son, Richard Wood and his wife Carol of Vero Beach, Florida; two daughters, Marilyn Custer and her husband Jimmy of Nowata, Oklahoma and Marsha Reid and her husband Ken of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; one son-in-law, Maurice Roberts of Winfield; six grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Nancy Roberts; three brothers and three sisters.
