Northridge closes home softball tournament with wins – Greeley Tribune

Cross country

Local programs compete at the St. Vrain Invitational, in Lyon: Many local programs participated in the very competitive St. Vrain Invitational. Eaton junior Logan Gullett won the men’s 2A / 3A competition in 16 minutes, 16.10 seconds. Second-year separation student Caden Schweer finished third (16: 53.80). Reds second year Andie Rasmussen won the women’s 2A / 3A race in 20: 04.50. Lyon won the boys 2A / 3A team title with 93 points. Liberty Common won the girls 2A / 3A team title with 58 points. Severance (253) placed 11th in the men’s 2A / 3A standings, followed by Valley (12th, 285) and University (13th, 300), Eaton (14th, 336). Northridge (443) finished 17th. Severance (204) was 10th in the women’s 2A / 3A standings and Valley (361) 13th. Niwot won the boys 4A / 5A team title (48) and the girls title (21). Roosevelt (533) was the top-ranked local boys’ team in the boys 4A / 5A standings, finishing 20th. Windsor (608) was 23rd, Greeley Central (707) 25th and Greeley West (791) 27th out of 27 ranked teams. Windsor freshman Cole Mazurana was the top-ranked local boy in the 4A / 5A competition, finishing 32nd (18: 00.80). The Wizards (295) placed 10th in the 4A / 5A girls’ team standings. Roosevelt (486) finished 18th and Greeley Central (559) 20th. Greeley Central rookie Ruby Frederick-Law was the top-ranked local participant in 4A / 5A. She finished 28th (20: 57.30), immediately followed by Windsor rookie Maggie Bush (29th, 20: 58.20).

Soccer

Eaton 32, Platte Valley 0, in Kersey: Eaton, the reigning 2A champion, recorded his second shutout in three games this fall. The Reds limited their longtime Patriot League rivals to just 14 yards of sharp attack. Eaton ran for 222 yards on 35 carries. Senior Ethan Florez led the balanced attack with 77 yards on 14 carries. Florez also led the Reds’ explosive defense with 13 tackles, including seven solo. Junior Morgan Tribbett made 12 tackles, including seven solo. Eaton improved to 3-0 overall. Platte Valley fell to 1-2.

Dayspring Christian Academy 58, Akron 18, in Greeley: Dayspring posted perhaps their best performance this season to improve to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the 1A-8 game of the Plains League. The Eagles entered the game in sixth place according to CHSAANow.com, while Akron (3-1) placed fifth.

Prairie 54, Peetz 18, in Peetz: Prairie got off to a quick start and never looked back, leading 38-0 after a quarter and 54-6 at halftime. Freshman Carter Jaeger led the Mustangs’ balanced rushing attack with 82 yards on nine carries. Senior Maverik Mertens had two of Prairie’s three rushing touchdowns, carrying the ball four times for 61 yards. Senior Andy Long led three Mustangs who completed at least one assist. He logged on 2 for 2 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Senior David Speicher caught two passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Prairie improved to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in the 6-man North Conference 1A game.

Boys football

Beth Eden Baptist 3, Union Colony Prep 1, at Wheat Ridge: The two teams were tied at 1 at half-time before Beth Eden topped Union Colony 2-0 in the second half. The Timberwolves fell to 0-5 with the non-league loss.

Windsor 15, 5 Hostel, Greeley West 2, in Greeley: Windsor scored several runs in each set. Freshman Lindsey Hinson hit 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and two runs for the Wizards. Junior Olivia Schramm also had two RBIs, with a triple, on 2v4 strikes. Rookie Ellyse Hydock led Greeley West, scoring 2 for 3 with the Spartans’ lone RBI. Windsor improved to 14-4 on aggregate, 5-0 in Game 4A of the Northern Colorado Athletic Conference. West fell to 7-11, 0-5.

Valley 18, Platte Valley 7, Hostel 5, in Kersey: Valley took complete control early on, taking a 5-0 lead in the first set and 13-1 in the top of the fourth. Senior Bailey Segura, senior Kyah Grant and sophomore Brianna Mercado each had three hits for the Vikings. Senior Grant and Tori Damian each earned two RBIs. Junior Sadie Lynch led Platte Valley, scoring 3 for 4 with two runs. Junior Rylee Woods and sophomore Miranda Farthing each scored two points for the Broncos. Valley improved to 6-8 overall, 3-5 in the 3A Patriot League game. Platte Valley fell to 1-12-1, 0-8.

Eaton 8, Strasbourg 0, at Eaton: The defending 3A champions Reds continue to make a major step forward into the playoffs next month, winning their seventh straight game. Freshman Kiauna Smith hit 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Junior Jaeli Lewis had two RBIs on 2-on-4 hitting. Senior Emma Pinkstaff hit 2-for-4 with two runs. Second-year pitcher Sadie Ross took the win in the circle for Eaton, allowing just one hit with 14 strikeouts and two walks in a 6 2/3 shutout. The Reds improved to 12-3 on aggregate, 6-2 in 3A Patriot League.

Northridge goes 2-0 in the home tournament, at Greeley: After losing a game to open their home tournament a day earlier, Northridge earned a 19-3 win over Eagle Valley and an 8-5 win over Pueblo East to crown Rumble On The Ridge. Against Eagle Valley, junior Jayah Tellez, junior Sydney Fosdick and sophomore Kennedy Strausheim each had three hits for the Grizzlies. Strausheim had a record four RBIs. Tellez and senior Hallee Widler each had two hits against Pueblo East. Junior Hailey Michalik produced a record three RBIs. With both wins, Northridge improved to 9-8.

Mead 22, Greeley Central 0, 3 hostel, in Mead: Greeley Central met a juggernaut, the fifth-ranked team in 4A, according to CHSAANow.com. Mead scored 11 runs in each of the first two innings. The Mavericks beat the Wildcats 15-0. Greeley Central fell to 8-10 on aggregate, 0-5 in the 4A Northern Colorado Athletic Conference game.

Weld Central offers two, in Greeley: Weld Central closed their Northridge home invitational campaign with a hard-fought pair of losses, losing 6-4 to Pueblo County and 5-3 in eight innings to Brush. The rebels fell to 6-11.

Boys tennis

Windsor welcomes the fall invitation, in Windsor: Windsor finished the second and final day of hosting their home tournament, the Windsor Fall Invitational. Silver Creek walked away with the tag team title, scoring 57 points. University (28) was fifth, Greeley West (26) was sixth, host Wizards (21) was seventh and Northridge (3) was eighth out of eight teams.

Girls volleyball

Valley 3, Highland 0, in Gilcrest: Valley started fast and finished strong, winning 25-16, 25-22, 25-8. Seniors Hallee Sherman and Marcela Carvajal had nine kills each for the Vikings. Carvajal served four aces. Sherman had two blocks and 11 digs. Senior Claire Lowery led Highland with eight kills. Senior Shelby Rusch had seven kills and five digs for the Huskies. Valley improved to 6-2. The Huskies fell to 4-3.

Eaton 3, Eagle Ridge Academy 0 in Brighton: Eaton, the reigning 3A champion, continued his mid-season streak, winning his sixth straight game. The Reds won by scores of 25-8, 25-16, 25-16. Junior Emily Maske led Eaton’s offense with 14 kills. Junior Rylee Martin had 10 kills, two blocks and 23 assists. Senior Megan St. Jean has six aces and 13 assists. The Reds improved to 6-3 on aggregate with the non-league victory.

University 3, Yuma 0, in Greeley: The college controlled the game throughout, winning 25-15, 25-16, 25-18. Seniors Aesha Alrashed and Chloe Ruhl had 13 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Ruhl and junior Brenna Blehm each had three aces. Alrashed chipped into three blocks. The college improved to 10-1 with the non-league victory.

Briggsdale 3, Caliche 0, in Iliff: Briggsdale got his third straight sweep, 25-13, 25-13, 25-12. The Falcons improved to 10-2 with the out-of-conference victory.

Greeley West splits the tournament games in Denver: Greeley West went 1-1 in a tournament hosted by Lincoln High School. The Spartans beat Lincoln 2-1 and lost to Westminster 2-0. West moved his record to 3-5 overall.
