The Phillies have invested heavily in pitching in this year’s draft, using 14 of their 20 picks to select weapons that they believe can potentially contribute to the Major League level.

The organization selected Andrew Painter with the 13th overall pick, a 6-foot-7 right-hander from Calvary Christian Academy in Florida with an impressive arsenal highlighted by a mid-90s fastball and solid change. Sixty-six percent of his strikeouts (93 in 47 innings) this season have come via strikeouts, and he’s posted a .38 ERA. He also won first-team All-American honors from MaxPreps.

“It’s a complete package,” Phillies recruiting director Brian Barber said. “He’s a kid who wants to be awesome.”

Most simulation projects projected Painter as a mid-to-late first-round selection, but the Phillies had a unique look as Painter spent two seasons playing with Dante Girardi, the son of manager Joe Girardi.

“We had the opportunity to get inside information about some of her background and her makeup,” Barber said.

“Joe was always there before practice, combing the field,” Painter said. “We were still talking.”

Painter made an oral commitment to the Florida Gators, but first-round rookies typically forgo college and sign a professional contract.

The Phillies went with outfielders in the next two rounds of the draft, selecting Ethan Wilson with second pick and Jordan Viars with third.

Wilson hits from the left side and brings in a powerful bat. A member of America’s first all-star team, he hit seven home runs with a 0.313 batting average and 31 RBIs last spring with the University of Southern Alabama.

“We think it’s a complete hitting package,” Barber said. “We love the attacking potential and the production. They are high contact skills with very good barrel control and a guy hitting the ball hard. So we think that’s the full offensive package with the (ability) to hit and hit for power in the future. “

Viars, who turns 18 next week, already has a sizable frame at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds.

“It’s a bat that we’re very happy to bring into our system,” said Barber. “He’s really young but already big and strong and he can really hit. He pushes the ball to the left center and has the ability to activate it for power. He played the corners of the outfield and first base, but the bat was the draw. “There were several teams on him. After choosing him, we got texts from other teams saying, “You stole our guy. We think it’s a complete typing package.

Barber, now in his second season with the Phillies, is hoping these three picks will strengthen an often-ranked farming system when it comes to impacting talent.

The Phillies selected right-hander Mick Abel of Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore., With their first pick last year, No. 15 overall. He’s 1-3 this season with a 4.23 ERA for the low-A Clearwater batsmen, although he has 58 strikes in 38 1/3 innings.
