Evergreen Malayalam carol ‘Kaaval Maalagamare Kannadakaruthe’ is one of the most played songs during the Christmas season. Sujatha’s sweet voice makes for a delightful experience, forcing us to play the song on repeat to fill the air with Christmas moods. Sujatha had performed this iconic singing song for the album ‘Snehapratheekam’ composed by AJ Joseph.

Christmas at home

Sujatha says she started celebrating Christmas at home after the birth of her daughter Shweta. Now, Sujatha and her husband Mohan are delighted to celebrate the joy of Christmas with their beloved granddaughter. “The Christmas season and Christmas carols always give a unique festive atmosphere. “Kaaval Maalagamare” is the most special among my Christmas carols and my favorite too. I can see the face of baby Jesus every time I sing this song. I also like the songs ‘Ponnu Myrrah Kunthikkam’ and ‘Alakadalum Kulirilayum’. I mainly sing ‘Alakadalum Kulirilayum’ on stage because it has a unique vibe, ”explains Sujatah.

Mother and child

Sujatha often visits churches to offer prayers. Her heart fills with joy when she sees the idol of Mother Mary and the Child Jesus on her knees. “Our wishes would be quickly granted if we told our mothers. Likewise, the Child Jesus also understands the prayers and desires of his mothers. When I spend a few moments in silence with them, I have the impression that they are talking to me. Mother Mary and the Child Jesus understand our prayers even if we do not say them to them. I always have a few photos in my bag; The photo of the Child Jesus is one of them, ”notes the singer.

Sujatha remembers an incident that happened years ago when she realized the incredible grace of Mother Mary. Legendary singer Yesudas used to sing every year at Velankanni Church during the annual festival. Once, Sujatha also accompanied Yesudas to Velankanni to sing at the concert. She was only 12 at the time. “On the day of the concert, Dasettan had a sore throat. The program was about to begin. But, he couldn’t sing because the voice didn’t come out of his throat. We were to sing Christian Tamil and Malayalam devotional songs. We were the only singers outside of the orchestra. I was a little girl then and only knew a few songs. Everyone was so tense. But Yesudas prayed and then began to sing on stage. I was surprised. Her amazing voice flowed effortlessly without any difficulty. It was an incident when I experienced Mother Mary’s impeccable love and grace, ”says Sujatha.

Song for mom

Sujatha and Shweta are busy working on a musical album, their dream project, dedicated to Mother Mary. They plan to release the songs produced under the banner of Chennai-based studio Marian Digital after the Christmas season. “It was Antony, who had worked as G Devarajan’s keyboardist, who told us about this project. We got interested as soon as we heard about it. This album is unique and would be different from other songs that have been released in honor of Mother Mary. In addition, Shweta and I are extremely excited to be working in this project as we are mothers too, ”concludes Sujatha.
