How to fix failing crops

Cold weather crops may suffer from stunted growth where they may not die off, but neither will they.

Stéphanie advises: “The best way to restart crops in the fall is to add a compost mulch on the surface.

“A few centimeters are enough and leave on the surface for the life of the soil to gradually integrate.

“It will feed the crops for a whole year. Alternatively, make a liquid food from comfrey and nettles, or buy a food made from seaweed.

It’s not uncommon for crops to struggle this time of year, says Skye – head gardener at Links House in Royal Dornoch.

The gloomy British weather can create difficult conditions for crops to thrive in our gardens.

Skye added: “If you grow resistant vegetables such as kale, Swiss chard, leeks, carrots and Brussels sprouts, cover them with a fleece to protect them during the colder months.

“This will give your crops a better chance to thrive in the most difficult conditions and will be ready to harvest all winter. “

If you haven’t already, now is the time to plant some bulbs to allow them to overwinter.

Skye recommends planting the garlic bulbs, mulching and covering in order to take advantage of the fresh garlic in the summer.
